Yesterday I said goodbye to my mother— a woman defined by love, faith and courage. For the past three years she battled an aggressive form of dementia. A battle that has been at the forefront of my everyday. From my photos and work, you would have never known this was something I was walking through. Social media was never a forum to share this aspect of my life. She was a private woman and my silence was a form of respect to her. But today I want to celebrate her. Her slow fade from life has been a heart-wrenching, painstaking walk. Losing a loved one is hard, especially when you see them suffer in a horrific way. Many people ask if it was my mother who taught me to cook. My mother didn’t teach me to cook. Cooking and the kitchen was a chore for her. She worked full-time and had three daughters to raise. Cooking was the last thing she wanted to do, and that was perfectly okay. I could list all the ways my mom positively impacted my life but I won’t. There is one thing that I want you to know though. My mama, Nancy, taught me the greatest gift of all— how to love unconditionally. This unconditional love has infiltrated my life in everything I do. Because it is with love and in love we can reach people and make an impact. Incurable illness is a monster, one that I wish this beautiful woman did not have to face. She met her story courageously, holding on to her faith in Jesus even in the face of the unknown. Even in the end, when she had no words, you still felt her love. She expressed it in her face, eyes and demeanor. She was a gift to all who came to be with her. This post is long, full of grammatical errors and filled with the grief I have been carrying for the past three years. Yet, I tell you this story of Nancy, my mom, to encourage you today. Love. Love whole heartedly, without condition and with courage. Be a light to those you meet, be a light to those who are in your life. Be like Nancy. Love, smile, sing, have faith, be courageous— and every once-in-a while, give a wink to those you meet.
